Any job is what you make of it â even if itâs not your dream job!

At some point in your career, you may find yourself in a role that you donât like as much. Perhaps you were placed in it because of a company re-org or new grad program. In any job that youâre in, there will be parts you both like and dislike. Rather than being miserable, try to see your current role as a stepping stone to get to where you want to be in the future.
I was placed in my first role at Microsoft Canada, and I knew very soon that it wasnât an area that I was extremely passionate about. However, I chose to appreciate the fantastic opportunity to learn about the world of sales operations and gained many valuable skills (e.g. analytics). I also had an incredible manager who took the time to understand my goals and gave me projects that better suited my interests. By focusing on getting great in the role I was in and understanding my stakeholders, I ended up opening many doors!
Look for transferrable skills and experiences. Look at your current role and evaluate what valuable skills and experiences you can gain from it. Youâd be surprised by how much overlap there is between different rolesâespecially between your current role vs. aspirational role.
Make an impact first. Hiring managers may not be interested in you as a candidate if you canât prove to yourself and them that you are capable of achieving results. Figure out what success means on your team and work towards it.
Note: I am simply sharing my learnings from having 300+ coffee chats all the way up to the C-Suite level. From here, you're empowered to do your own research and make your own decisions! Â
